How to store fish ?
- After dressing the fish, it's crucial to keep it on ice to maintain freshness.
- Use an insulated cooler with the drain plug open to let ice water drain out and prevent the fish from getting waterlogged.
- Avoid water contact as it can spoil the fish's flavor.
- Wash your fish in cold water and dry it with a clean cloth or paper towels and then refrigerate them.
- Wrap the clean fish in waxed paper, plastic wrap, or aluminum foil.
- Store it on ice or in the refrigerator.
- Most fish can be refrigerated for up to two days, with larger fish or pieces lasting longer than smaller ones.
- Lean fish like panfish and walleye store better than fatty fish such as trout.
- Freezing fish is another effective storage method, extending its shelf life from three to 12 months.
- Proper preparation is important to maintain the fish's flavor.
- Options for freezing include:
- Placing the cleaned fish in a freezer-safe ziplock bag, removing as much air as possible before sealing.
- Wrapping the fish in aluminum foil, followed by freezer paper.
- Using an airtight package sealer to remove all air from the package and preserve flavor.
- Freezing the fish in a solid block of ice using a refrigerator container with just enough water to cover the fish.
How to store fish for whole night or many days ?
To begin, remove the packaging from the fish. Sometimes, butcher paper or deli paper can stick to the fish and be difficult to remove. I recommend using a sealable plastic bag to store filleted fish. Before sealing the bag, try to remove as much air as possible by squeezing it out.
Next, find a large colander and place some ice at the bottom. If you have flaked ice, it works best for this purpose. Put the fish in the colander and cover it with more ice. To catch the melting ice, place the colander in a bowl. Store this setup in the refrigerator and remember to drain any water and add fresh ice once a day until you're ready to cook the fish.
If your freezer doesn't have the option for flaked ice, you can store the fish in a mixture of ice cubes and water. Immerse the sealed bag of fish in the ice cubes and water, and keep it in the fridge. Similar to the previous method, drain some of the water and add more ice each day until it's time to cook the fish. These two techniques can also be used for storing whole fish.
I do not recommend storing fish directly on or in ice, or in ice water without the protection of a plastic bag.
